I can’t ignore a challenge. Last week a local marketing firm asked for cocktail recipes based on Hurricane Sandy: aka Frankenstorm. I went to my lab and started concocting. Since the NYC area was hit hard, I based the cocktail on Bacardi’s Big Apple Rum. I added Midori for the “franken” part of the storm, and added light ginger beer. I made another batch and used a black licorice strand as the stirrer. Worked ok for a while, until it started to soften. I made yet another batch and used salted caramel to rim the glass. I love the touch of salt and the ending bite of ginger.

Did I mention that I won the contest?

Frankenstormy Version 1

frankenstormyWhat you need:

  • 4 oz ginger beer
  • 2 oz Bacardi Big Apple Rum
  • 1 oz Midori
  • 1 oz lime juice
  • a couple of fresh mint leaves
  • ice
  • lime slice, for garnish

What you do:

  • Muddle mint in cocktail shaker.
  • Add ice, rum, Midori and lime juice.
  • Shake.
  • Add ice to glass.
  • Pour ginger beer over ice.
  • Top with rum mix.
  • Garnish with lime slice.

The only difference in version 2 is the addition of a salted caramel rim and an apple slice.
