I’ve been keeping up with the Simple Green Smoothies challenge. Instead of daily updates I decided to do a few at a time. I keep reminding myself not to worry about the colors of the finished smoothies. I’d love my drink to be bright green but I need to remember that other ingredients will change the color.

For each smoothie, remember to blend the greens with the liquid first. I find spinach purees much better than kale; I try to blend kale a bit longer to reduce the pulp.

Speaking of pulp: what’s the difference between smoothies and juicing? The pulp aka the fiber. Some people prefer juicing vs. smoothies. I’m not an expert on the difference but from what I’ve read I think it’s important to understand your body and how you react to fiber. Some people can’t tolerate the pulp, perhaps suffering from an irritable digestive system. Juicing requires little to no digestion and the nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream quickly.

Fiber helps to clean out toxins that can build up in the colon. Less toxins leads to your body’s ability to better absorb nutrients thereby improving digestion.

I also find that smoothies (from the fiber) fill me up. I have less of an appetite, which keeps me in control of putting that leftover piece of steak in my mouth.

Greensmoothiegirl.com says, “You’re likely to also notice cravings for bad food decrease, your desire to exercise increase, emotional stability improve, your skin and hair look prettier, and your sex drive increase!” While I won’t comment on all ;-), I have found in a few short days that my cravings for all the Christmas desserts and cookies has decreased tremendously and I couldn’t wait to go out and shovel snow. I hate shoveling and I hate being cold.

Day 2’s Simple Green Smoothie was “Quick Pick Me Up.” I loved the fresh citrus taste. Sunshine — and grass — in a glass. The ingredients turned the finished smoothie into a nice green color. I was :-).
